SICILY. Syracuse. Deinomenid Tyranny, 485-466 BC. Didrachm (Silver, 21 mm, 8.37 g, 3 h), circa 480-478. Nude horseman riding to right, leading a second horse to his left. Rev. ΣVRAΚO-ΣI-ON Pearl-diademed head of Arethusa to left, wearing pearl necklace; around, three dolphins swimming anti-clockwise. Boehringer 52.7 (this coin, V28/R35). HGC 2, 1352. Rizzo pl. XXXIV, 17 (this coin). SNG Lockett 874 (same dies). SNG München 924 (same dies). Very rare and nicely toned. Struck from a somewhat worn obverse die and with numerous light cleaning scratches, otherwise, very fine.
